Forgotten Candies That Deserve a Comeback

There was a time when a quarter could buy you a small bag of happiness. The candy aisle at the corner store was a wonderland — and some of those treats have completely disappeared from shelves. Here are the forgotten candies that still live in our memories.

1. Wax Lips

You put them on, made a face at your friends, and then chewed them for about thirty seconds before realizing they tasted like nothing. But you loved them anyway. They were pure theater.

2. Candy Cigarettes

The ones that came in a little box that looked just like a real cigarette pack. You “smoked” them on the playground. It was a different era. Kids today might not understand it, but everyone knew what these were.

3. Pixy Stix

A paper straw filled with flavored sugar. That was the whole product. You tipped your head back and poured it in. It was basically just sugar with a delivery system, and it was perfect.

4. Wax Bottles

Those tiny wax bottles filled with a few drops of colored syrup. You bit off the top, drank the syrup in one sip, and then chewed the wax. The syrup was the point, but the wax was the experience.

5. Candy Buttons on Paper

Little dots of sugar stuck to a long strip of paper. You peeled them off one by one, and you always got a little paper with each one. That was just part of it.

6. Zotz

Hard candy with a fizzy powder center. When it hit your tongue, it fizzed. It was like a science experiment you could eat. Kids who had never tried one were always suspicious. Kids who had tried one were always ready for more.

7. Bit-O-Honey

Honey-flavored taffy wrapped in wax paper. It stuck to your teeth in a way that was almost aggressive. But the flavor was warm and sweet and completely its own thing.

8. Marathon Bars

A braided chocolate-covered caramel bar that was eight inches long. The wrapper had a ruler on it. You could eat it slowly, section by section, and feel like you were getting away with something.

9. Space Dust / Pop Rocks

The candy that crackled on your tongue. There were rumors about what happened if you swallowed it with soda. None of those rumors were true, but they made eating it feel like an adventure.

10. Chick-O-Stick

Crunchy peanut butter and toasted coconut in a stick form. It was a little messy, a little crumbly, and completely delicious. You probably remember seeing these in a big jar on a store counter.

11. Sugar Daddy

A caramel lollipop on a stick. It lasted forever. That was the whole point. You could work on one of these for an entire afternoon.

12. Necco Wafers

A roll of chalky, pastel-colored wafers in flavors that ranged from good to mysterious. The chocolate ones were the prize. The licorice ones were the penalty. You ate them all anyway.

13. Black Crows

Licorice-flavored gumdrops. Either you loved them or you didn’t. There was no middle ground. The people who loved them really loved them.

14. Candy Necklaces

You wore your snack. That was the innovation. A stretchy string of sugar beads that you could eat one at a time or just bite off a chunk. By the end of the day, it was sticky and half-gone.

15. Squirrel Nut Zippers

Caramel and peanut butter wrapped in wax paper. Old-fashioned, a little sticky, and completely satisfying. These were the kind of candy you found in a grandparent’s dish.
